Trip to Goteborg, Sweden (11-12 Nov)

Our first overseas weekend trip from Oslo was to Goteborg (Gothenburg) in Sweden (11-12 Nov). We hired a car for the 2 days to make the approx 4 hour journey. We had many stops along the way to Goteborg, including Halden - an important Norwegian border town until Norway and Sweden agreed to a truce (after many centries of fighting) around 1905. After crossing the border, one of the main objectives of the trip was soon fulfilled - to go in search of "cheap" alcohol. Success on this front, we were able to relax and explore around the city of Goteborg, taking in the tourist sights and shopping by day and some of Goteborg's bars by night. On Sunday it was more sightseeing including a visit to Universeum - Goteborg's indoor zoo. A really cool place with a bit of everything - rainforest, aquarium, reptiles, etc. As an aussie with plentiful supply of warm weather, the operability of an outdoor zoo in winter with lots of snow is something you wouldn't normaly think about. A short detour on the trip back fulfilled the other main objective of the trip - and no it was not a stop at Ikea. It was the purchase of some red meat - well enough to virtually buy out the local supermarket!! Safely back across the border into Norway we all were happy with our successful and interesting trip, but still a bit perplexed by the Swedes' love of wine in a tetra pack (ala a 1L orange juice)!
