Trip to Tromsø, Hammerfest and Melkøya - Feb 17-21, 2007

Amid February came the opportunity to travel to the very north of Norway to visit the Snøhvit LNG plant in Hammerfest. I spent a few days beforehand in Tromsø, the northernmost university town in the world, checking out the sights and the skies (for northern lights - see other section for northern lights pics). The J-team + a new member - Anthea, then travelled on from Tromsø to Hammerfest and witnessed one of most scenic flights any of us have experienced, flying over snow-capped mountain isles on the 45min trip to Hammerfest. Hammerfest is surely a different world in winter compared to the summer town I visited just a few years ago (in 2003), yet such a town where I could remember the streets and landmarks from my previous visit (including the cabins I stayed in on the hill outside of town but this time were covered in a couple of metres of snow!!). The LNG plant (the reason for our visit) was great to visit - such a huge plant compared to anything I've worked on before (at peak construction, there were over 3300 people working on the plant at any given time).
